From Nature to Money

In order to provide myself with a challenge, I would want to start a business from scratch. However, this business will be from nature. I would purchase a small island that is not inhabited my any humans. The goal of my journey would be to use the resources found on the island to start a new business and become richer. To start off, I will enter the island with a one-month supply of food. This means that I am forced to work really hard to make sure I do not starve after one month. I would have to hunt animals with the weapons I craft (i.e. bow and arrow, harpoon). Soon, I would build shelter with the tools I build, raise animals, and alter the landscape to my advantage. The place I live in will be a farm. I will grow my own food and take care of animals, which will be used for food or labor. As we all know, the business idea will arrive. Eventually, I would try to create a product out of the island’s resources and sell them to the mainland after building my own boat out of wood found on the island. This mission is not solely to make money. The reason I would do this is to prove my skills in survival by being able to make everything from nothing. This is my belief, capitalism. I believe that capitalists should prove themselves by starting a business with all odds against them. This is why I want to embark on this journey and prove to everyone that I am always capable of making money.

  1. Awesome post Sevag! One specific reason why I liked your post was that you did not go on your voyage with a ton of money. You went on your trip with the minimum number of equipment you could, and worked for the rest of the money. I enjoyed your voyage. Awesome description of your voyage.

  2. At first I was thinking about how little sense your brilliant once in a lifetime plan made? I found myself saying "Why would he want to spend an already unlimited supply of money simply to make even more money?". When I finally read your sentence about your true goals of survival and creating an experience of capitalism for yourself I understood why you would go through all of this trouble. To be honest I find many flaws with your plan. First of all how could you guarantee your survival on such and island? Besides the initially large supply of food you have, you would have to rely on the island to have quite a substantial population of animals for you to herd. And keep in mind that these can not be any animals, for you can not simply be a shepherd to any animal like lemurs or lizards. You have to guarantee that this island has all of the key components you need to survive, and the only way you could possibly do that would be if you were to hire a group of contractors, engineers, and highly skilled scientists to create the perfect island for you to live on. This island would be stocked with livestock such as pigs, cows, and lambs for you to herd. Also you mentioned that once you rooted yourself within this island, your plan would be to discover some sort of miracle product that hopefully no one else before you has discovered. Good luck with that (seriously, I am not being sarcastic at all, and hope that you succeed in your endeavor). All in all, when the end comes, all you will have done is synthesized a false sense of capitalism within yourself. You would have ingeniously wasted money in order to make more money(arguably a much lower amount than the initial infinite amount of wealthy we started this project with). In the end the world will not be a better place, but you will have successfully sated your inner desires. (Slow clapping).

  3. Sevag, you sound extremely confident that you will be able to come with an idea to make money in time before you starve. It is smart that you will be setting up a time limit (i. e. the one month food supply) for your plan to be enacted; it is always smart to think ahead, especially when conducting business. This sounds like an fascinating opportunity, and I hope that you try it out in the future once you have enough wealth to do so, as I am sure it would be quite character-developing. Good luck, and awesome job.
